Uniform is an innovative collaboration between Matthew Schuetz and Zellerfeld centred around a new technological approach to formal footwear. It is a recyclable, 3D printed cuban-heel mule emphasizing silhouette, volume, and balance.
Utilizing Zellerfeld’s 3D-scanning custom fit technology, each pair is made to order, printed to the specific shape and requirements of each customer. Customizable attributes are forefoot fit, collar tightness, and midsole cushioning stiffness. The shoes are printed from a fully recyclable TPU that can be broken down and reused to print new shoes.
Early ideation began with digital sketches and 3D modelling utilizing a VR headset.
The product is a single printed form. There are no opportunities to explore combinations of materials, textures or colors. Silhouette and proportion were the most important factors to developing a unique design.
Refinement of details, proportion, and technical functionality were completed using Blender. The program enables fine and precise adjustments such as perfectly mapping the interior to the Zellerfeld last.
Preparing the shoe for production included testing watertightness of the model, checking for print overhangs that would create an support malfunction during printing, overall print volume and material usage, and digital printer test trials.
Uniform was the first Zellerfeld shoe featuring a separate sole volume, an angular design and formal heel.
